WHAT MOST PEOPLE THINK….
Most people think that authenticity is all about knowing exactly what you want, where you are going and what’s important. They think it’s about letting people know exactly how you feel and what’s on your mind, being unique in some creative way or being fearless and unconcerned by other people’s opinion. There are many different interpretations of authenticity and whilst your version of authenticity may include some of these things if you are going out to fulfil these definitions of authenticity I’m afraid you’ve already missed the point because the moment we attempt to BE SOMETHING authenticity ceases to exist.
In my opinion, the best way to define authenticity is as a personal journey in which you learn to connect with and live out of truth, the truth of who you are, what you want, what you value, what you truly believe and having these things direct your decisions, actions and behaviour. It is about understanding, owning, celebrating and expressing all of who you are. So for example, whilst your version of authenticity may include knowing what you want and where you are going and living in a way that acknowledges that, for another, it may include knowing that you don’t know what you want or where you are going and living in a way that acknowledges this… both version of authenticity, though different are equally valid as both include the key ingredient, truth.
CHALLENGES OF AUTHENTICITY…
Ralph Waldo Emerson Said
‘To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment”
This is so true, walking the path of authenticity is made even more difficult by the fact that we live in a world where people and society encourage us to be anything but ourselves. Where tapping and expressing our unique selves fully is frowned upon in order to maintain a pack mentality and existence. Just to make the path of authenticity even more challenging, we can be inauthentic and not even realize it until we stop and take stock of what we are feeling, saying and doing. So being authentic, whilst being a simple concept is not easy.
And the difficulties surrounding authenticity don’t just stop at the world and outside influence but rests within us too because before we can even attempt achieving authenticity, not only do we need a level of understanding of who we truly are but we also need be aware and connected to our emotions, as well as possess enough self-love to enable us to truly express those emotions and ourselves in a full and healthy way. If the latter two, are areas in which you struggle, I offer a private online support group, focused on developing in these areas so as you have the necessary tools to journey into the world of authenticity.
WHY AUTHENTICITY IS IMPORTANT…
Now you may be thinking of the concept of authenticity as the latest fad or buzz world within the personal development/ self-help industry but I assure you that this concept and the acknowledged importance of authenticity in regards to psychological health and wellbeing have been around for many, many years. World re-known psychologist and founder of Person Centred Therapy, Carl Rogers, went as far as to say that it is our disconnection with self, our inauthenticity/ incongruency that is the cause of many emotional and psychological difficulties, such as anxiety, acute stress, dysfunctional relationships, etc that we see today.
Whilst being authentic can help you overcome some of the symptoms mentioned above or at least dramatically reduce them, this does not mean a life free from pain, fear and challenges. However, it does mean a life of purpose and meaning. Where you also experience more confidence, inner wisdom and guidance, increased energy, a better relationship with yourself and others, self love and acceptance, a level of freedom from others, their opinions, their manipulation etc, a drive to pursue what is really important to you and a resilience and inner strength to help you to deal with future challenges.
So as you can see there are many, many benefits to pushing past the world of “fakery” and really connecting with the truth of who you are and as I mentioned earlier authenticity, is a very personal journey in which we really do need to stop and take stock of our feelings, our desires and our actions.
